How to Choose Your Controller
1. Calculate Your Load: Determine the total wattage of your solar panels. Use the MPPT Calculator to help calculate your load requirements.
2. Select the Controller Size: Choose a model that can handle the voltage and current requirements of your solar array and battery bank.
In Victron's MPPT model names, for example, MPPT 75/50, the first number (75) is the maximum PV open circuit voltage. The second number (50) is the maximum charge current. This naming convention helps easily identify the capabilities of each model:
Understanding the numbers:
- Maximum PV Open Circuit Voltage (V): The highest voltage that the solar panels can deliver to the controller. Ensure the panel's open-circuit voltage does not exceed this value. To calculate this, add up the open-circuit voltages (Voc) of the solar panels if they are connected in series.
- Maximum Charge Current (A): The highest current that the controller can send to the batteries. Ensure the panel's short-circuit current (Isc) is within this limit. To calculate this, add up the short-circuit currents of the solar panels if they are connected in parallel.
- Wattage (W): The total power the controller can manage. Calculate the total panel wattage and ensure it is within the controller's capacity. For example, if there are four 185W panels, the total wattage is 740W.
The 100V and 150V series are the perfect size for Sprinter van and Transit van solar panel array systems, providing the necessary capacity and efficiency for mobile solar energy setups.
